What Is Alt Text (and why it matters)

Alt text (short for alternative text) is a short description added to an image that explains what the image shows.

Originally, alt text was created for accessibility, so screen readers can describe images to visually impaired users. But today, it also plays a big role in SEO, user experience, and even conversions.

In Pop Convert, you can add alt text to the images in your popups, which means those images become more accessible, more understandable, and more search-friendly.

Why Alt Text is important

Alt text allows screen readers to “read” your images.

So instead of:

“image”

A user hears:

“Red velvet sofa with gold legs – 20% off today”

This matters because:

  • You make your store usable for visually impaired visitors.
  • You improve overall UX.
  • You reduce legal risk in regions with accessibility regulations.

This alone is already a strong reason to use alt text.

Search engines cannot see images. They rely on alt text to understand them.

When you add good alt text:

  • Google understands what your image is about.
  • Your images can appear in Google Images.
  • Your pages become more relevant for keywords.

Example:

Bad alt text:

popup-banner

Good alt text:

Valentine’s Day popup offering 10% off on handmade candles

That’s real SEO value for something that takes 10 seconds to write.

3. Better experience when images don’t load

If an image fails to load (slow connection, ad blockers, errors), the alt text is shown instead.

So instead of a blank box, users see:

“Free shipping on orders over $50 – limited time”

That means:

  • Your message still gets delivered.
  • You don’t lose the conversion opportunity.

4. Higher conversions (yes, really)

Alt text forces you to describe the offer clearly.

This improves:

  • Clarity of your message
  • Relevance of your popups
  • Understanding for assistive tech users
  • And even AI tools that scan content

In other words: clearer content → better comprehension → higher chance of action.

Why this matters specifically in Pop Convert

With Pop Convert, your popups often contain:

  • Promotional images
  • Product images
  • Offer banners
  • Seasonal campaigns

By adding alt text in Pop Convert:

  • Your popups become accessible
  • Your campaigns become SEO-friendly
  • Your offers remain readable even if images fail
  • You improve overall quality and professionalism of your store

It’s a small field in the editor, but it has outsized impact.

How to write good Alt Text (simple rules)

Keep it simple. No need to overthink it.

Good alt text should be:

  • Descriptive
  • Short (usually under 125 characters)
  • Natural (not keyword stuffing)

Examples for popups:

Instead of:

image1

Use:

Exit-intent popup offering 15% off first order

Instead of:

banner

Use:

Free shipping popup for orders over $45

Alt text is one of the highest ROI features nobody talks about.

It helps you:

  • Be more accessible
  • Rank better on Google
  • Deliver your message even when images fail
  • Improve clarity and conversions

And in Pop Convert, it takes literally one extra line of text to get all those benefits. Small effort. Real impact.
