Creating a popup with the AI Editor

The AI Editor is the fastest way to build a popup. Instead of starting from a blank canvas or a template, you describe what you want in plain language, and the AI builds a working popup for you, which you can then refine like normal.

You'll find it on your Dashboard, in the banner near the top.

Starting a campaign

Click Try AI Editor on the Dashboard banner. This opens the New Campaign screen, where the AI asks what you'd like to create.

Answering the AI's first question

You'll see a few common starting points as clickable options:

  • Make an announcement
  • Grow my email list
  • Create a survey
  • Increase AOV with upsells
  • Promote a discount
  • Recreate a design I have

Pick one if it matches what you're after, or ignore them and type your own goal into the text field at the bottom. You can also attach an image using the icon next to the text field, useful if you already have a design or a reference you want the AI to work from.

Talking it through

From here it's a conversation. The AI will ask follow-up questions to narrow down what you want, things like what the offer is, what the goal is, or what tone you're after. Answer as you would with a teammate. The more specific you are, the closer the first draft lands.

A few examples of good opening prompts:

  • "A spin-to-win popup offering 10-50% off, to grow our email list, in a natural, earthy palette."
  • "An announcement popup for our Black Friday sale, direct and bold."
  • "A survey asking new visitors how they heard about us, three questions max."

You can also click Start Over at any point if you want to abandon the conversation and begin again.
Once the AI has enough to work with, it builds the popup and takes you into the full editor to finish it off.

The editor

The editor opens with your AI-built popup already on the canvas, ready for you to refine.
Along the left side are six tabs, each controlling a different part of the popup.

Elements

Everything on the popup, listed layer by layer: containers, buttons, text, images, inputs, and so on. Click any element in the list to select and edit it directly on the canvas.
This is also where you add things the AI didn't include. If it built you a simple email capture and you want to add an icon, an image, or a second line of text, add it here the same way you would in a from-scratch build.

Below the element list is a Need more control? panel with an AI text box. Use it to ask for small adjustments in plain language rather than fiddling with settings manually, things like "add more space around the button" or "make the inputs larger."

AI

A dedicated chat with the AI, separate from the quick-prompt box under Elements. Use this tab when you want to keep giving direction after the initial build. It has the full picture of what's already on the canvas, so you can ask for anything from small copy tweaks to a full change of direction ("make this feel more premium," "swap the offer to free shipping instead of a percentage off").

Targeting

Controls who sees the popup and where:

  • Display Schedule - control when your display is active
  • Display Pages - control which pages your display appears on
  • Display Devices - control which devices your display appears on (desktop, mobile, or both)
  • Display Locations - target by country or region
  • Translations - add languages to reach more visitors

Trigger

Controls when and how often the popup appears:

  • Display Trigger - what triggers this display (examples include exit intent, a time delay, or scroll depth)
  • How often should this display show? - frequency settings, so the same visitor isn't shown the popup on every single visit

Conversion

Controls what happens after someone converts:

  • Send a Notification - get notified when someone subscribes
  • Send an Email - send an email when a visitor subscribes
  • Sync with Integrations - sync subscribers to third-party services
  • Deliver Webhooks - send data to external URLs on form submit

Brand

Pulls in your Brand Kit, so the popup stays consistent with your logo, fonts, colors, and tone. If you haven't filled yours in yet, it's worth doing before you rely heavily on the AI Editor. See the Brand Kit help article for details on setting it up.

Publishing

Once you're happy with the popup, click Publish in the top right. Before then, use the Test dropdown and the desktop/mobile toggle above the canvas to preview exactly what visitors will see on each device.

Tips for better first drafts

  • Give the AI a goal, not just a format.

"A popup" gives it very little to work with. "A popup to recover carts that get abandoned at checkout" gives it a real brief.

  • Mention your offer specifics upfront.

If you already know the discount, the code, or the free shipping threshold, include it in your first message rather than adding it after.

  • Reference your Brand Kit implicitly.

The AI Editor already pulls from your Brand Kit, so you don't need to repeat your colors or tone in the chat, just the goal and the offer.

  • Use "Recreate a design I have" with an image.

If you have a popup design from another tool, or inspiration you found elsewhere, attach it rather than describing it from scratch.

  • Treat the first build as a draft.

Even a strong prompt won't always land perfectly. Use the Elements or AI tab to refine rather than starting over.

Common questions

  • Where do I find the AI Editor?

On the Dashboard, in the banner near the top. It's coming to the Displays page soon as well.

  • What's the difference between the AI box under Elements and the AI tab?

They talk to the same AI. The box under Elements is a quick way to ask for a small change without leaving what you're working on. The AI tab is the full conversation view, useful for bigger changes or if you want to see your past requests.

  • Do I need to fill out my Brand Kit first?

Not required, but recommended. Without it, the AI has less to go on and will make more generic design choices.
